February 23, 2009

theres this little thing called life. and its pretty insane.

So lately, i have been doing a lot of living. I dont mean existing, i mean living. This is always something i have felt the need to differentiate.  When you exist, you breathe in, breathe out, blink, eat food, watch tv. When you live, you feel, and you do things that make you feel.
Over my february break i did a lot of travelling. Now i am back in class, sick as a fucking dog, and tired as shit. its kind of a buzz kill, but im getting back to the serious things in life. well the things that i need to address right now in hopes of getting to live every day.
Friday is taste of chaos in worcester. I am excited. It will be the first time i meet Nichole, my boss from alternative press in real life. i hope i make a good impression! im struggling to get out of class early so i can take the train in at a decent time. I have to be at the show and hour early for alt press, but also i am doing a really cool spray chalk campaign for Thursday, where i go around with a stencil (see below) outside of the venue and spray chalk the thursday logo in the parking lot, on the sidewalk, etc. Since spray chalk is not permanenet, and washes away its not like graffitti and its not a felony, but im still a little scared of getting hasseled. I bet the rush will be fun though.

i havent done this in a while, but here is my current 5+1:
1-my pillow!
2-south street in philly. ITS SO CUTE! its like if harvard ave in allston were cute and uber hip and had good food and a sweet venue.
3-DAYQUIL! bought some tonight. cannot wait to gobble it up tomorrow.
4-getting back into the mode of things. 2009 got off to a really slow, topsy turvy start and i feel like it is finally starting to fall into place.
5-The War Child: Heroes compilation. It is a bunch of covers of classic rock and roll songs by the super hip of today, like Lily Allen, Tv on The Radio and Beck. AND! the proceeds of the album go to children who have been affected by war. http://warchild.com/
6-MOST AMAZING THING EVER: when you make a microwave burrito, take a paper towel and wet it and then wrap the burrito in it. definetely one of my favorite things of this week.

and now for my sweet thursday stencil
that i contrived into a super stealthy shopping bag, so that i can be discreet while doing my job.

pace class of 13!

I got accepted to pace university in new york city today. im so happy about it.
a monitor fell on my foot tonight. it hurts.
I feel like I probably post too much about the scenic and sparks the rescue, but honestly, the bromance between those two bands is heartwarming. every other sentence out of everyones mouth is "hey babe" "luv you boo" "lemme lick that butt". I wish all my friends were like that. there's always drama and hatred, but when I go away I get to escape it to the land of butt lovin and cigarette sharing. its hugs and kisses and pokes and winks. its fun. be nice to your friends. smother them in love and kind words, and I'm sure you'll be a happier person.

Fuck you MBTA

so, on my way home from regina's the bus fucked me over and I wrote the MBTA (massachusetts bay transportation association) an email:

im on a bus that was supposed to leave kenmore at 1:55. the bus arrived at 1:48 and sat here, with the bus driver inside until 1:22 am.
this is the last bus, and I have 2 transfers to make, so I can catch my 1:33 bus from harvard so I can get home.

BUT. SINCE YOUR BUS DRIVERS ARE RUDE, USUALLY INCOMPETENT, AND TOTALLY UNCARING OF THEIR PASSENGERS, I WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO PAY $20-30 to get from allston to arlington.

I am constantly mistreated, and appalled by the rude behavior of your bus drivers. the last bus doesn't mean its my last bus, it means I have to get fucking home. the mbta is unfortunately my only, and least reliable mode of transportation. if it were not 12 degrees out I would have just walked because your service is more unreliable than getting a fair trial in guantanamo bay.

with the money you charge for the t, which is equal to or sometimes more expensive than the NYC metro which is WAY more extensive, you should either keep better tabs on your careless employees, or you should have a service that runs later than 1:30 am on a friday night in the country's most popular college city. the stupid star trek doors did not solve anything, but better service would.

thankyou for your consistently abominable service,

Polaroid is SAVED!

According to the UK paper, The Independant,

"For a generation, the Polaroid camera gave near-instant pleasure to millions of users around the world, chronicling everything from births and weddings to the downright explicit. But when digital photography came along in the 1990s – with instant images and the ability to edit and delete pictures before they see the light of day – Polaroid was doomed, its iconic white-framed snaps apparently defunct.

When Polaroid announced last February that it would stop production of its instant film, it seemed the much-loved camera was gone forever. But within weeks, a group of users had started a global campaign for the format to return. And now, thanks to an unlikely saviour, their pleas have been heard.

If all goes to plan, the Polaroid factory in Enschede, Amsterdam, will soon be making film again thanks to its new owner, an eccentric Austrian artist and businessman named Florian Kaps. Mr Kaps, 39, has dedicated the past five years to instant photography. He set up Polanoid.net, the biggest Polaroid gallery on the web, and the first ever Polaroid-only art gallery in Vienna, called Polanoir.

Now he plans to save the film. "The project is more than a business plan; it's a fight against the idea that everything has to die when it doesn't create turnover," said Mr Kaps.

Dubbed "The Impossible Project", the development of new film for Polaroid cameras launches today. Working with the Manchester-based black and white photography company Ilford, the machinery is in place to produce film of two exposure types, each compatible with both the classic SX-70 cameras popular with artists and the more modern 600 series.

Work has begun on a prototype. By hiring 11 of the original Polaroid team from the factory floor, Mr Kaps aims to mass produce both colour and black and white film under the Impossible label by December, coinciding with the projected date that existing stocks will run out." -Emily Dugan for the Independant (UK)

This was quite a short stinit of stopping polaroid film production..Part of me feels like it could have been a publicity stunt to get lots of people to buy up the remaining stock of the film before the old owner sold the company or quit, or dropped dead or whatever and before the introduction of this new film. Fujifilm got FUCKED over! they have the patent to the old film, and their camera is nearly twice the price of the modern, 600 series polaroid ($70 vs $30). i hear some pissed off fujifulm execs and a shorlived fujifilm instax or a drastic price drop.

whatever, im happy i dont need to go out and buy a new camera, and that the quality of my future polaroid pictures is going to be better :)

I am coining a term. all users, beware.

I am officially coining the term "Nouveau Indie". NOUVEAU? indie?? yes. basically, nouveau indie is hipster music. Now, unlike the rest of the world i dont hate hispters...every generation has had their hip kids: hippies, hip hoppers, and we have hipsters. Youre probably considered a hipster. i know i am. and unlike the rest of the world im totally okay with it. yes, i like tight pants, wear too much american apparel, and listen to some bands that are kind of wierd~*~*. get the fuck over it.
ok, now back to Nouveau Indie. nouveau indie bands include the big hits of 08 and what are to be the big hits of 09. Bands like MGMT, Vampire Weekend, Santogold, Likki Ly, Yelle, No Age, Steve Aoki...yeah all those kind of bands. The ones you could see playing at some beat up club in the lower east side or brooklyn full of obliterated mid twenty year olds dancing like fucking mad. Coldplay is even getting a little nouveau indie with their latest release.
I think the Nouveau Indie wave is going to take of pretty soon, and there will be a million little Cory Kennedys popping up all over the place raving out in awkward colors and slow but sythny beats.

officially coined. Like Paris Hilton with "thats hot"

case and point,
Keaton

Stories-2

Human Circus tour, I forget the exact date...which ill probs remember in 10 minutes, summer 07. Valencia, FTSK, Self Against City, and Permanent Me. ICC, Allston ma.

It was going to be my first time meeting Bex, who id become great friends with through samie..and I mean that as in, we loved each other without having hardly talked...idk. anyways, since it was valencia, who, being the group of kids we were, being BLG kids, we'd seen a thousand million times, the whole crew was present. We'd decided that it we were going to have a wiffle ball tournement, and dress for the occasion: booty shorts, headbands, tube socks, the works.
Me and shay ended up being the only ones actually to play wiffle ball with Permanent me and Valencia, but I feel like that was one of the most fun days at icc. Everyone showed up around like 11/12, and everyone really just hung out. there were no fangirls, and no rivalries. We made a DriveThru street team video, starring DanceDanceLenny that it was hilarious and actually won amongst the other regional teams. it was just great. I hadn't really thought about that day until just now, as im on the bus, an image of Johnathan from SAC popped into my head going "baby im a rockstar!". LOL WUT.

Stories-1

so tonight i was at a show, thinking about all the little memories i wish i could preserve forever and all the amazing adventures ive been on, and i thought it would be awesome to share a few once a week. I think it would give you, whoever you are a better understanding of who i am and what makes me me, and theyre pretty entertaining.

since this is part one, lets start back in the day, like way back when i first started really going to shows.

Lansdowne Street:
Back pre-september 2007, there used to be these two clubs in boston where all the shows would be: Axis and Avalon. They were right across the street from The Green Monster at Fenway Park (if you dont know what those are, google them...seriously) on Lansdowne Street. The first time i went to lansdowne was for my 14th birthday, where I saw Action Action, Morningwood and The Sounds. I didnt really experience lansdowne until after that...but that was the first time.
My second show at lansdowne, was Panic At The Disco's first headliner with the lucient dossier vaudeville cirque. I knew panic was pretty popular, so i showed up at like....11 am. I got there and the line was already down the block, but there was this girl, K-Rex, who id seen at some other shows and she let me sit up front with her and her friends. I hung out all day, did cartwheels, played with chalk, walked down to mcdonalds, watch the bands arrive...the whole nine yards.
It was really rad, cause everyone else was doing the same thing. Noone was there to show off how much cooler they were than you, or who they knew that you didnt. Everyone was just there to go to a sweet show, and see some sweet bands, and the majority of the shows were either at Avalon or Axis which were side by side....so like at least 3 times a month, there would be this group of kids, that all went to the same-ish type of shows that would gather outside of Avalon and Axis at like 8 or 9 in the morning, in rain, shine, or snow and just hang the fuck out. It was the best fucking time ever. I did so much growing up on lansdowne street. I met people, i made friends in a matter of a few hours of conversation that i am to this day incredibly close to, i made enemies, i laughed at stupid girls that wore the band's shirt to the show, i saw my favorite band for the first time, i brought my friends in line spaghetti, made wallets, i curled up in a plastic bag with my friends cause it was pouring, i cohersed my way into guestlist spots, i stood outside talking to bands in vans, getting yelled at when i got home for being retardedly late.
Lansdowne street was the shit. They tore down the two clubs and a House of Blues is going to open in February, and there are going to be a whole new breed of not Lansdowne kids like Me, Heather, Lisa, Lena, Johny, Marina, Jamie, Amy, Cassie, Joanne, Lindsay, Mal, Brian, The Bonners, and so many more people, but of House of Blues kids in neon pants blaring all time low, thinking theyre living the dream, when really, the ship set sail years ago.
I can't get to shows early anymore. Its not the same, its like just retarded cause its not Axis and Avalon.

that was a lot longer than i expected.... thats enough for now...more later.

12/20

SO, this weekend was supposed to go like this:
-friday, skip school and go to Virginia for the scenic/tbl/tga
-saturday, see the bigger lights in jersey and spend the night @ margots
-sunday, go to jingle my bells somehow.

this is what happened:
friday, it snowed like CRAZY like a foot and a half
saturday, instead of going to the bigger lights, me and nicole went to Clifton Park to see Sparks the Rescue and FNB open for All Time Low. We were gonna leave @ 3 but a series of unfourtunate events, including shovelling out the car and nicole burning her hand left us running a few hours late. We missed all the bands but all time low, but the Without Fucking Sheep acoustic in the Sparks van was well worth it. haha oh man. i ended up watching part of ATL sidestage with toby from sparks and christ from fnb and it was wierd. they like really truly are a teen sensation.
sunday, well in the wee hours of sunday morning after shenannegans @ the venue, I stayed with my friend Adam, and he drove me home sunday in a CRAZY blizzard. we woke up and i had like 800 texts and i look outside and it was like white xmas crazines. so we got some Jimmy Johns WHICH I HAD NEVER HAD, and it took 5 instead of 3 hours to get back to Boston.

although nothing went according to planned, it was a great, unsober weekend.

and i have a sweeet new babydoll now.

12/12/08 Proletariat & LAB art show: 100 artists for under $100

So, friday was the proletariat and lab art show. It showcased different pieces from 100 Boston artists for under $100. Goldenstache, Evoker, Kenji Nakayama, Skript, Clone, Manifest Destitute, Fish McGill, Media, Sweet, Maker, Ryan Lombardi, and a lot more were all part of it. Tons of people came out to the event and there was an open bar for the 21+ers with PBR, some scotch (i think...maybe some kind of whiskey?), and for the underagers some good old red bull. mmmm

the shoprats and myself. Sam bought a piece.

by far the best piece at the show. the board was stained, and then Skript stenciled that design on with varnish. i wish i had a picture of the other side...there was a girl on it and it was just straight up gorgeous.

you can kind of see the girl here....

i loved the one of the woman in the red. her face was beautiful

the penis nipple/vaginaface thing wiiiierded me out.

i love evoker's animated style.

MAD PEEPZ!

the show was really fun. im glad i got to attend. it was WAAAY better than the LAB art show that was around xmas last year. its cause its all about the PROLE! pix thanks to Kerry @ proletariat. arevolt.com

Rant Rant Rant

So, every time i shower, i end up having this huge internal debate...usually about the *~*future of music~*~*.
Topic du jour: what ever happened to the major label?

Ok, lets go back to 1999, 2000. I'd go back further, but this was when i started listening to mainstream. im not very old. Anyways, we're in 99/2000 and what was music like? There was this group of elites, the pop-stars, that ruled the world of music. They were all over MTV, the radio, the barbie doll isle at k-mart, magazines, the cd section, the straight to dvd section, nickelodeon, disney channel...everywhere. How did that work? Did britney spears start out as a myspace page? I don't think so. Were they bad? No! They were the ideal picture of perfection. Nobody could tell you otherwise, and even to this day, we'd all sell our kidneys for a Backstreet Boys, or N*Sync arena tour circa 2001.
Basically, there were the major labels, and they decided what everyone would listen to and everyone would love, and thats what happened. Hate on it all you want, it worked, so clearly they had to be doing SOMETHING right.

Then, i don't know when, or how but flash foward to like 2005 and the indie band is on the prowl. Everyone wants to be more original than their peers, listening to bands with names that are so nonsensical they make the overtly hipster casheir ringing you up at newbury comics cringe as he mouths "ugh, hipster" under his breath.
The kings of indie came and took the place of the major labels, and they decided who you, the public is going to listen to, what tshirt line you're going to buy, and what brand of cupcakes you should eat. EXCEPT, because everything is part of the *~indie~* scene, everyone thinks they can have a part of it. The sad thing is that really anybody can figure out a way to have a piece of the pie.
Result: The epitome of selling out. Not selling out to a major label, but selling out to cheap ray bans and neon pants, because its easy enough if you just write about dance clubs and "those girls".

I'm waiting impatiently for music industry professionals, rather than the douchebag who has stuck it in half the suicide girls, to listen to music looking for something new and specific, rather than weeding out lame myspace friend requests, to find that something, and make that band, or singer, or rapper or artist, or opera star, the one that has that spark that could become superstardom, and make them what everyone loves.

everything worked back then. i dont know why it changed. i want it all to work again. i want my children to have a britney spears, or a john lennon.

ugh, crap.

Its so cold out! Can i have some hot cocoa for the road?

So, i dont know what happened, but i woke up on monday (late, of course), and the temperature dropped a good 10 degrees from the weekend. Totally bogus...at least its not snowing yet.
School has been super lame this week. I found out that my friend/classmate, Jon, who was supposed to be moving back down south in december, is in fact leaving tuesday. :(. Its so soon! At least were having some festivities on friday.
Speaking of the weekend, here are my plans:
Friday-school, hang out with jon, and then Envy on the Coast, my numero uno band is playing at Arts Institute, in a classrooom. This is going to be my 26th time seeing them, and its going to be a teeny show. woop woop!
Saturday- im going with Heather to see my friends in The Bigger Lights for two days. Im assuming we'll leave by noon or so, and then is gonna be a TBL partay @ Vibe!
Sunday- Im hoping we all spend the day in town, especially since my philly babes, Ashley and Margot are coming down. The show is at Maxwells, in Hoboken. I LOVE HOBOKEN. its the cutest place in the world! The drive home sunday night is going to suuuuuck, but i've got 9am computer lab *barf*!
